The workplace is changing, and for the better. Employers are starting to realize that it is their responsibility to support a healthy lifestyle for their staff, especially seeing as how most of people’s waking hours are often spent at the workplace. This includes providing things like adjustable desks so employees can spend some time standing up instead of endless hours of sitting which has all sorts of negative health consequences, or providing healthy, well-balanced snacks and lunches instead of the traditional pizza, pop and chips.
Well keeping with that trend, many workplaces are now installing nap rooms. Wait! Nap rooms? Isn’t that encouraging people to be less efficient? Not so fast. According to this article from Big Think entitled Why Employers Should Choose to Install Nap Rooms Over Coffee Makers, workplaces that install nap rooms can expect to see an increase in productivity and problem solving skills.
Why is that? Because employees are no longer sleep deprived and so their brains function better. I’m a firm believer that being productive isn’t about endless hours of slogging away at your desk. It’s about having the energy and mental clarity to perform tasks at a very high caliber. Just like the old saying goes, quality over quantity. So if you’re an employer I have a question for you. What are you doing to support the health and well-being of your employees? The companies that will succeed in the 21st century are those who will be able to strike a balance between work and health.
