Oh the burpee! What an amazing exercise that hits all the muscles of the body, gets the heart rate way up, and hurts like a mother! It’s a great exercise for those looking to get a lot of work done in a relatively short period of time. The burpee is everywhere these days. It’s being incorporated into high intensity exercise circuits such as CrossFit or boot camps.
But how many burpees can someone really do before they start to lose their minds? It’s said that variety is the spice of life, so if you’re getting tired of the same old go-to burpee, why not try spicing things up with some new movements that are just as challenging? Especially if you’ve gotten to the point where you’ve done so many burpees that they don’t really seem to be the challenge for you they once were.
Remember, if you walk into the gym and perform a workout that doesn’t make you uncomfortable by forcing you to learn new movements and explore novel body positions, then that was the wrong workout for you. Don’t be comfortable. Always looks to push outside that comfort zone.
That’s why I like this article from The American Council on Exercise (ACE) entitled 3 Exercises to Do Instead of Burpees. It highlights 3 new movements that I would venture to guess many people have never tried. Start incorporating these new movements into your workout to help you further develop your movement literacy!
